Tagasaste (Tree Lucerne) is a small, fast growing evergreen tree. It’s mature size is up to 5m wide x 7m tall.
It is a nitrogen fixer with deep roots and we use it for this reason in our food forest.
It is frost tender when young but is tolerant of drought & wind and makes a great nurse crop for native species. Can also be used as a shelter tree, as stock fodder or for firewood. Rabbits also seem to enjoy eating it!
Birds & bees love the white flowers which appear in winter. Around our site in the Bay of Plenty they tend to flower around June and are particularly popular with the local Kereru.
Seeds need to be scarified before planting. We simply soak the seeds in near boiling water for 24 hours & then plant the seeds that have swelled.
Protect seedlings from snails & slugs when young – we have lost many of our seedlings to hungry little critters!
