Growing Goji Berries
Goji Berries are a deciduous shrub found in temperate and subtropical regions in China. They prefer well-drained soil & full sun but they will tolerate some shade.
The plants are hardy & drought tolerant once established and will grow up to 1.5m tall. They can be trained on a trellis or left as a shrub.
The berries are typically used in dried form but can also be eaten fresh, however they do not store well so are a good candidate for garden based snacking! The young shoots are also edible and used as a vegetable although we haven’t tried them and don’t know many people who have. We did find some instructions here about how to use them in a stirfry though.
While we haven’t established any goji berries in our food forest yet they are known to useful as informal hedges. Their extensive root systems can also be good for soil stabilisation so they could be used instead of Basket Willow.
They tolerate a variety of conditions including some shade and frost so would suit a number of locations from subtropical to temperate climates.
