Growing Macadamias
Macadamias are a subtropical tree originating in the rainforests of Australia. They therefore prefer warm temperatures and high moisture levels. Young trees are especially frost sensitive while older trees will tolerate mild frosts.
They enjoy well drained soil, although are not as picky as Avocados in this regard. They have shallow roots so protection from strong winds is beneficial.
Self-pollination is possible but to obtain a good crop it is best to have three different cultivars to allow for cross pollination. Flowering occurs in early spring with nuts maturing six to seven months later and must be allowed to ripen on the tree. They will drop naturally when mature.
Food Forest Use
Macadamias are a great source of fats and oils to add to your food forest. Being a rainforest native they will survive happily with some shade from canopy trees like Inga Beans.
