Planting Instructions:
Artichokes enjoy full sun & rich, well drained soil. They grow to a large size (up to 2m tall & over 1m wide) so allow plenty of space around them for future growth.
Leaves generally die back in winter or can be cut back and used as mulch. Frost tolerant but if you expect heavy frosts/snow it may be best to cut the plant back & cover with mulch for the winter.
Harvest & Use:
Harvest artichokes before the flowers appear, usually when the buds are still tight. Eat soon after harvesting.
Food Forest Notes:
Globe artichokes are part of the herbaceous layer of your food forest. Artichokes are a Mediterranean delicacy so will grow well in a guild alongside olives, rosemary, grapes, figs and any other typically Italian plants that favour hot summers & colder winters.
